Insight into the process of producing you with a custom size door blank and frame. ideal for smaller or larger openings than standard sized fire door openings.

Measuring door opening

The initial step in door installation is to take precise measurements, as mistakes here can be expensive. It’s crucial that a skilled professional performs the measurement of an opening. There’s nothing more frustrating than constructing a door and frame only to discover the door is too large for the opening, necessitating a complete rebuild. The measurements for an opening are width by length. Width should be measured from stud to stud, subtracting 15mm from the total width to allow for proper packing and ease of installation. The length should be measured from the bottom of the lintel or timber header down to the floor. When determining the measurement at the bottom of the door, it’s important to consider the existing flooring or what will be installed. If the flooring is not yet laid, the thickness of the timber floor, carpet, or tiles to be installed must be deducted from the total door length, along with a 3mm gap beneath the door and an additional 10mm for clearance above the frame.

The building process

Once we have the precise measurements for the doors you need, we can proceed with the construction process. Our fully equipped workshop is ready to assemble your custom-sized fire doors. We utilize fire-rated door linings that can be adjusted to any size to match your wall thickness. Fire and smoke seals are integrated into the frames to ensure that, in the event of a fire, smoke is contained within the affected area, allowing people to exit safely without the risk of inhaling excessive smoke. Additionally, we can incorporate a hardwood threshold into the frame, which not only facilitates easy installation but also ensures a perfect 3mm clearance under the door.

First, we calculate the size of the blank door to fit the frame. Next, we affix an 18mm thick hardwood lipping around the entire perimeter of the fire door blank to ensure compliance with British standards. We then plane and sand the lipping until the surface is smooth, preparing it for the final treatments, which include staining or painting. We advise our customers that fire doors and fire door blanks should be sealed within 48 hours of completion to prevent moisture damage.

We can proceed to the fire-tested and certified hardware. This includes three stainless steel hinges with fire strips, door handles, a euro sash lock with fire padding, a cylinder, and a door closer, accompanied by all the necessary signage. We are now prepared for the next step.

Installation & completion

After our meticulous work to precisely measure and construct your doors in our workshop at 25i Cwmdu Industrial Estate, Cwmdu, Swansea SA5 8JF, we are set to load the van and head to your location to install your tailor-made fire door blanks. Upon arrival, we will start by removing the old fire doors and frames, disposing of the waste at no extra charge. Once the opening is clear, we will secure the frame in place. It is crucial that the gaps around the frame are filled with fire-rated sealant to prevent fire from bypassing the door frame. We will ensure the door swings properly and that the gaps around the door measure between 3-4mm all around. Next, we will fit architrave on both sides of the frame and seal it. This process should not exceed two hours. Once completed, you will have a fully functional, compliant fire door blank. We will then provide you with a fire door certificate, demonstrating to fire officers that your doors meet British standards and your premises are safe to operate.
